Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.

Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.

The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.

Officers then found numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement say initial examinations indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.

Municipal representatives announced they were working "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the public for tips.

A high-ranking political figure stated the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be addressed promptly.

"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman focusing on individuals of migrant background in 2020.
