The record came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to let go.
The lyrics detail endings and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.
"I love way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."
Refinement of Sound
That recent confidence demanded a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.
For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.
"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."
Stories and Shared Laughter
The band's honesty fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.
One man ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.
"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."
A Secure Path
You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.
They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an international fan base.
However the sister act will consistently be their top priority.
"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
